Whatever Happened To?

Let’s face it, Hibs have signed some dross over the years. Whether it be under Big Eck, Tony Mowbray or Mixu Paatelainen, there’s been some so bad they’d be on the bench for your Sunday League side.

We decided to put Google to test and find out what some of these not-so-greats were up to nowadays…

Joe Keenan

Big Mixu signed this former Chelsea trainee whom Claudio Ranieri allegedly believed was a top prospect and offered him a 4 year deal at Stamford Bridge.

Josè Mouriniho put paid to his hopes of greatness and soon realised he wasn’t actually that good and promptly released him.

Hibs signed him prior to the 2008/9 season from Australian outfit Melbourne victory but as we soon found out, there was a reason why he was plying his trade in the Land of Oz and he failed to become anything other than a bit part player making 16 league and cup appearances, scoring once against Morton in a League Cup defeat at Easter Road.

Zibi Malkowski

A bigger Hearts legend than Hibs tells you all you need to know about this calamitous keeper.

Capable of being no more than decent on his day, loved throwing goals against the Jambo’s but they certainly weren’t the only ones who benefited from his eccentricities.

Tony Mowbray was the man culpable for bringing him to Easter Road after signing him from Dutch giants Feyenoord and remarkably gave him a contract extension halfway through his two year contract.

He featured on 57 occasions for Hibs. We thought we’d seen the last of calamity keepers when he left in 2008 until we seen the next guy on our list.

Malkowski is currently back in his homeland playing for the little known Korona Kielce.

Yves Makalamby

At around 11′ tall big Maka had all the attributes to be a top ‘keeper. Very athletic and agile and he should have been decent for Hibs. He wasn’t.

Another Chelsea trainee, John Collins brought him to the Scottish capital but despite JC’s faith in him, the nail biting started whenever the ball was near the 18 yard line.

Makalamby could be equally brilliant and brutal within any 90 minutes.

After leaving the Hibees he headed to Wales to sign for Swansea City but after the Swans released him he headed home to Belgium to sign for Mechelen.

The big man has since signed for Royal Antwerp. He’s made 4 top team appearances in total since leaving Easter Road.

Amadou Konte

The Mali Magician was another of Tony Mowbray’s less inspired signings.

He arrived from Cambridge United and offered a lot of height up front with not a lot else.

Konte did have one exceptional appearance when he came on as a sub against Hearts and helped turn around a 2-1 deficit to see Hibs secure a 3-2 victory.

The rest of the time he was hopeless.

He’s certainly been a busy boy since departing ‘enjoying’ spells with Kalamata, Potenza, Spezia (loan), Turate, Messina, Bitonto, Minyor Pernik and P. Madura United.

Barry Prenderville

The Irishman was a loanee whom Alex McLeish somehow wanted to sign on a permanent basis from Coventry City following Hibs capture of the First Division title.

Luckily the two clubs were unable to reach agreement on a fee for the midfielder who featured 13 times alongside the likes of Russell Latapy and Franck Sauzee.

After being released by Coventry, Prenderville failed to make it at Ayr United and headed back to the LoI to spend a season with St Pat’s.

He then featured for Oldham Athletic but was back home after two seasons to sign for Shelbourne. He re-signed for St Pat’s after making 75 appearances for Shels.

In 2006 shortly after signing for Shamrock Rovers Prenderville was released with other commitments cited as the reason for his departure.
