Darren McGregor is set to fulfil his boyhood dreams and turn his back on a move to the Scottish Premiership and sign for Hibs.

The centre half, who can also perform at right back, had seen his contract at Rangers ‘mutually terminated’ on Monday is thought to have also been interesting St Johnstone, Kilmarnock and previous club St Mirren.

McGregor’s move to Hibs will likely infuriate fans of the Ibrox side who voted him their player of the season last year but it’s thought the decision to release him boiled down to an additional year he was guaranteed on his lucrative ‘Gers contract if he featured in many more first team games.

Relations between the two clubs have been frayed since earlier this summer when Hibs refused to sell star midfielder Scott Allan to their Championship rivals who has subsequently moved to Celtic.

Alan Stubbs has been looking to further strengthen the Hibs squad and in particular his defensive options where his choices are extremely limited with Jordan Forster still sidelined.

The acquisition of McGregor, who grew up a Hibs supporter, will certainly be welcomed by supporters as the club seek to improve their early season form after handing an early title initiative to their Glasgow rivals following Sunday’s defeat at Ibrox.
