John Doolan is expected to be named as Alan Stubbs number 2 following Eric Black’s return to Wigan, with the 45 year old likely to be confirmed on Monday.

The Latics boss, Uwe Rosler, confirmed the Liverpudlian’s departure from the DW Stadium after spending the past three years coaching both the youth and first team squad and admitted he was heading north to join Stubbs at Easter Road.

“We were all very surprised when John Doolan decided to go to Hibs, I just didn`t see it coming,” Rosler told Wigan Today.

The appointment of Doolan ends speculation over who would fill the role after David Unsworth initially rejected the chance to follow Stubbs to the capital.

Andy Holden, who spent 19 years as a coach at Everton had also been strongly linked to the post however it appears Doolan will now fill the coaching void left when Maurice Malpas followed Terry Butcher out the Easter Road exit door.

Meanwhile, Bradley Donaldson, released by the club in May has secured himself a deal with Hibees Championship rivals Livingston with the defender potentially facing his former employers on the opening day of the season.

Another player released following relegation to the Championship, Tom Taiwo, has also joined a Championship outfit after agreeing terms with Falkirk.
