A Spanish newspaper had on Sunday claimed Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich was keen to purchase Hibs following the acquisition of Real Mallorca through one of his subsidiary companies but according to a source ‘close to the club’ the Daily Record have been informed the reports were nonsense.

The weekend report in Marca claimed the Russian was seeking to take control of several clubs and claimed Hibs, Brazilian side Corinthians and Israel’s Hapoel were all purchase targets.

However it is believed there is interest in the club from both home and abroad with a potential bid from an American consortium believed to have held tentative talks with the board already.

Hibs are ripe for a takeover bid as things currently stand following relegation to the Championship with supporters protests reaching a peak on Saturday when a host of former players spoke at a rally against Chairman Rod Petrie.

Paul Kane, the figurehead for the ‘Petrie Out’ campaign was joined on stage by Pat Stanton, Mike McDonald, Jackie McNamara and Micky Weir and all were unwavering in their belief that change at the top is now a necessity.

New CEO Leeann Dempster will meet with boss Terry Butcher later this week to discuss his future at the club however it would be a surprise to many if he was allowed to continue in his role.

The most recent poll on Vital Hibs saw 81% of readers believe Butcher should resign or be sacked following the Premiership play-off loss to Hamilton.
