McKay & May? Can Hibs Sign Either?

Billy McKay is the latest striker to be linked with Hibs despite Dundee United having agreed a fee with Wigan for the former Inverness Caley man.

The 26 year old was said to be in discussions with the Tayside club over personal terms but the Daily Record is reporting Alan Stubbs is keen on the Northern Ireland international although it appears based on the Hibees boss refusing to confirm or deny his interest in the player this afternoon.

It would be a bold move for Hibs and although it seems unlikely the player would choose to continue his career in the Championship rather than Premiership it can be argued he’d be joining the bigger club despite the two teams currently being a division apart.

McKay netted 54 top flight goals during his near 4 year spell in the Highlands and would be a terrific signing if there’s any truth in the story.

In a similar vein, rumours persist in the Capital regarding Hibs interest in Sheffield Wednesday striker Stevie May who is available for loan from the Owls after failing to convince new Hillsborough gaffer Carlos Carvalhal that he can fire the goals required by the English Championship side.

May is well down the pecking order in S6 and has been linked with Preston but if the rumours are to be believed, he could be set to return north of the border if Hibs can agree terms on a loan deal.

The former St Johnstone scored only 7 times for Wednesday in the league last season after agreeing a four year deal with the Steel City outfit but could still return to the club should his proposed loan move to Hibs or elsewhere prove a success.

Either player would prove to be a valuable signing should the speculation be correct and if they are the calibre of striking options interesting Stubbs then the club should be applauded for looking at proven players who’ll command a hefty wage rather than journeymen forwards of whom we’ve seen enough of at Easter Road to last a lifetime.

The obvious problem will be convincing players of this standard to sign for a club in the Scottish second tier however Stubbs is a popular man manager and sells the club well to potential recruits.
