Kevin Thomson was stripped of the club captaincy to reduce the pressure on him, according to Hibs boss John Collins.

Following all the speculation about where Thomson and team-mate Scott Brown will be this time next month, Collins chose to give the armband to defender Rob Jones prior to yesterday’s 0-0 draw with Aberdeen at Easter Road.

After the match, Collins said: “I think it is important for Thomson to focus on his own game. I don’t expect any problems with Kevin in the future and the most important thing is that he is on the park.”

Both players have been linked with various clubs, ranging from Celtic to Portsmouth, but it seems likely they will continue to play for Hibs as long as they are at the club. While Collins may have intended to relieve the pressure on Thomson, neither of the players impressed against Aberdeen.

In fact, Portsmouth’s Harry Redknapp must have felt he had made a wasted journey when he watched yesterday’s match…
