Liam Fontaine has been a key member of the Hibs squad this season with the former Bristol City defender a mainstay in our back four and a key performer in it. Thanks, in part to him, we’re second in the Championship table and looking for a place in the Scottish Cup final.

His contract, a one-year deal signed last summer, expires at the end of the season and he’s revealed to the Edinburgh News that talks haven’t, as yet, taken place on an extended stay into next season, or beyond….

The 29-year-old, positively though, has made it perfectly clear that he’s more than happy with the club and is also happy to put those talks on hold until the season ends.

‘We haven`t had any chats. My contract is until the end of the season and that`s it so far. I`m happy to focus on the football. I think any person who is enjoying themselves and their football and are happy would always want to talk about a new contract. But that will come when it comes.’

Having been in the game for long enough now he knows how these things work and it’ll ‘take care of itself.’

Fontaine’s top priority when he came to Easter Road was to play regularly, perform well and enjoy his football – all of those boxes are being ticked with his main focus now on making sure that we see through our main objectives, promotion to the Premiership and a place in the Scottish Cup final, which of course if we make we’ll want to win!

‘I`m quite an experienced player now, that`s not my focus. I came up here for a reason, to get playing again and to be happy. That`s what I am doing and I`d like that to continue not just for the season, but for as long as I play the game.

‘If the gaffer has said he wants to keep everyone then that`s a positive. That will take care of itself when it happens. My focus is purely on what we want to achieve on the field.’

I’d be surprised, whatever level we’re at next season, if Fontaine wasn’t part of things with us next season at least, wouldn’t you?
