Yogi Serious For Scotland Job?!

Former Hibs gaffer John Hughes has thrown his hat into the ring for the Scotland job with the bad news being he’s actually serious.

Hughes last managerial gig was last season with Raith Rovers whom he managed to get relegated, a dismal playing style and continual digs at players in after match press conferences which left them feeling alienated, the Fifers chairman Alan Young admitted they got it wrong when appointing the much travelled Hughes.

He told The Herald after dismissing Yogi “He came in at a bad time for this club and tried to get us out of that. However there are things that – if they need to be done or said – that should happen within the dressing room. Some things have been done publicly that, in my opinion, should not have been done publicly.”

Hughes, who also starred as a player for Hibs has had spells in charge at Falkirk, Inverness Caley, Livingston & Hartlepool alongside his tenures at Easter Road and Starks Park told BBC Scotland he believes his record at domestic level should afford him the opportunity to lead the national side. We and many others would disagree.

When asked what he had achieved in the game to suggest he’d be the right man for the job, Hughes replied: ‘I’ve done two First Division promotions, manager of the year First Division, 3 Cup finals, 1 Scottish Cup, 3 teams into Europe- two for the first time in their history- be it Inverness and Falkirk and I’ve done it all working without a chequebook; I think I’ve done it spending £240,000 in fifteen years of experience, so it tells you I can get the best out of what I’m working with, stimulate them. That’s what John Hughes can bring.’

So, he’s certainly a man still confident in his own ability but the prospect of one of his cringe-worthy pre or post match interviews should be enough for even the SFA to see this as a non starter without taking into account his failed spells at Hibs, Hartlepool and Raith.

It’s interesting he mentions getting the best out of what he’s working with… unfortunately it never worked with the likes of Edwin De Graaf, Michael Hart, Danny Galbraith, Graeme Smith, Paddy Cregg etc at Easter Road. Maybe Falkirk or Inverness fans will tell you differently but I’d doubt it. Most Bairns fans were delighted to see him go. Over to you Caley…

Imagine the nick of Scotland under Yogi? His slow ponderous playing style is ideally suited for international football mind. But no. Just no. I’m a Leither and can’t understand him most of the time. Only real fitba men ken what’s going on. Ken?
