Former assistant to Tony Mowbray at Easter Road, Mark Venus, has came from nowhere to be backed into odds on favourite to take over the managerial role vacated by Terry Butcher’s dismissal last week.

The 47 year old was a popular figure at the club during his first stint at the club and despite heading south to team up with Mowbray at West Brom when he left Easter Road, retained an affection for Hibs and the capital city.

The former Wolves stalwart is keen to take his first steps into management having been short listed for the Middlesbrough job following Mowbray’s dismissal last year although the Teeside outfit opted for Spaniard Aitor Karanka despite Venus winning his only game in charge – a 4-0 demolition of Doncaster.

His odds tumbled throughout the late afternoon when, after originally not being quoted on the betting markets, he appeared at 10/1.

These odds were quickly shortened to 11/10, replacing Ian Murray as favourite, but shortly thereafter further dropped until he was priced at a miserly 1/2.

Only time will tell if the speculation is merely such but it would appear substantial money has been placed on the Hartlepool born Englishman replacing the unpopular Butcher.
