David Unsworth is set to follow Alan Stubbs to Easter Road if, as expected, Stubbs is confirmed as the new Hibs manager on Monday.

The former England cap will become assistant to the ex Celtic player – a role which he currently occupies alongside Stubbs with the Everton reserve side.

Unsworth last summer rejected the chance to become Kilmarnock manager when he declined to have talks with the Rugby Park outfit despite having been granted permission to talk to them by Sheffield United with Killie then opting to appoint Allan Johnston.

The 40 year old has a decent coaching background having been first team coach at Preston as well as having caretaker managerial spells twice at the Lancashire outfit.

Following his departure from Deepdale he became Head of Academy Coaching at Sheffield United with a short spell as assistant to caretaker manager Chris Morgan before leaving Bramall Lane in August last year.

He teamed up with Stubbs at Everton last September and looks set to follow his former Toffees teammate north as they seek to turnaround the Hibees fortunes.

An appointment like this is surely a massive gamble. Especially given what could happen to us if we dont get promotion this season. Surely we should be looking at a manager with experience. A comparable club like Aberdeen have always went for experience and after some ups and downs look to have the man to take them on. Yes one or two struggled but theyve never been relegated!

Ive said for many years now that good or bad our managers will be out the door within two seasons. On to greater things if they are successful. P45 if not. Its a cycle we need to get out of but here we go again with yet another gamble. When will we ever learn?

I agree with this ^^^^^ to a certain extent but then I remember we’re now a Championship club and wonder if we can still get any big names. I’d love to have seen Owen Coyle or Alex McLeish but I’m happy to give Stubbs and Unsworth time to get it right. Automatic promotion will be a big ask but if we finish above the yams then we’ll be in a good place to battle it out in the playoffs.

Any managerial appointment is a gamble nowadays. I’m happy to take a chance with Stubbs and Unsworth if it’s them who get the gig. I’d much rather them or Gemmill than Jimmy Calderwood or someone who has at best a mediocre past. We tried experience with Fenlon and Butcher and the football was honking so if these guys come in with fresh ideas then I’d be delighted. The dinosaur ways of Butcher proved old school management techniques are finished in the modern game. Stubbs has played under and coached under some great bosses. If a little of that knowledge has worn off on him he’ll do well in Scotland.
