Riordan linked with move away

Sky Sports seem to be trying their hardest to convince Hibernian supporters that star striker Derek Riordan will leave Easter Road this coming summer with his contract having only 12 months left to run.

Their latest “Sky Sports Understands” story covers the same basic ground as last weeks “Sky Sports Understands” story by claiming Deeks is attracting attention from various clubs abroad including rather bizarrely clubs in Korea.

There is however no more mention of interest from Championship clubs so presumably the Sky Sports team deem England nowhere near exotic enough for the Hibees favourite son.

On a more serious note, the loss of Hibs top scorer this season with 16 goals, would be a massive blow to a side currently finding it difficult to create genuine goalscoring chances as witnessed in last weeks home defeat by Rangers.

The story must be treated with a certain amount of scepticism however given Riordan’s reluctance to leave the goldfish bowl of Edinburgh football where he is a big fish in a very small pond.

Having had a disastrous spell at Celtic following his departure first time round from Easter Road it’s more likely he’d rather see out his career playing for his boyhood heroes than move elsewhere.

The doubts that are currently in the minds of supporters over his long term future mainly relate to the ridiculous fine the player received after (rightly) criticising the playing surface at Easter Road and how it has affected his relationship with club management including boss John Hughes.

Only time, as they say, will tell.
