The desperate months for Scottish football fans in World Cup year tend to be May (Your team’s not in the Scottish Cup Final or winning the league) and June and July (Your national side are not in whatever finals are being held in that particular year but England are).

These months are usually full of silly stories in newspapers (Boyd to Celtic anyone….) and rumours which in the internet age tend to grow arms and legs before petering out like a damp squid.

This week though the Edinburgh rumour mill has been awash with rumours of Hibs securing the services of a 34 year old former Scotland international currently earning his trade with Bristol City.

Step forward Mr Paul Hartley.

The very same Paul Hartley who was persona non grata with the Hibs support throughout his time at Tynecastle and who took great delight in winding up the green and white hordes at every opportunity whether in the maroon of the Jambo’s or after moving to the green and white hoops of Celtic.

Lest the fans never forget the hat trick he scored in a Scottish Cup semi final which oversaw a 4-0 capitulation.

Yet the story is not disappearing.

The rumour moungers claim he’s apparently signed a two year deal to return north of the border and re-join Hibs where he spent a rather forlorn two years under Alex McLeish.

His family are settled in Scotland and have failed to move to Bristol and as such are hoping he moves back home.

With age now against him and the prospect of a 46 match league campaign to look forward to it may well be Hartley does fancy a move back north particularly when the manager whom signed him for Bristol City, Gary Johnson, has moved on to pastures new. However if John Hughes sees his future at Easter Road then he quite simply has to hit the ground running.

Only time will tell if the Edinburgh rumour mill is still on the ball.

Anyway – Boyd for Celtic anyone?? Anyone…….
