A third spell at Hibernian was something some thought could happen when Derek Riordan returned to the club a few months ago but this hasn’t happened and isn’t likely to happen, he continues to train with Hibs merely to keep fit and (hopefully) get himself a deal somewhere?

However, it doesn’t mean Hibs aren’t benefiting from having him around….

As the Hibees are, most importantly Jason Cummings is with him picking up helpful hits and tips from the striker.

Riordan, who enjoyed successful spells at Easter Road between 2001-2006 and 2008-2011, isn’t ‘a saint’ on or off the pitch with him involved in several incidents that he would prefer to forget that didn’t do the three-times capped former Scottish international or Hibs any favours but it’s a ‘favour’ all-round at this point in time that is working for all concerned.

Cummings has spent plenty of time looking at Youtube videos of Riordan, who he is learning from first hand in training as he’s in at the training ground day-in-day-out.

The 20-year-old told the Edinburgh News.

‘Derek has been training with us for the past few months and I have learned a lot from him

‘I have just been watching him in training and he has been different class. Deeks has told me how to work on my game and my finishing. That’s why I have had such a good spell with Hibs.

‘Since Derek has trained with us I have scored in every game and I have learnt a lot from him. Deeks was different class. The other night I typed his name into Youtube and watched some of his goals. Some of his goals were just unbelievable back in the day. He is the same now and he still sticks the ball in the top corner at finishing drills. It is a joy to watch Derek and learn from him.’

Not only is Cummings able to learn in a footballing sense he’s also got a ‘few pointers’ from him as to what to, and not to do, away from the field of play that should stand him in good stead, adding.

‘I have been working hard on that side of my game and Derek has given me a few pointers on that; on different things away from football. He has helped me a lot.

‘Derek has had a great career. He played at the top and got his move to Celtic and he was different class at Hibs. He was an unbelievable player and it is a pleasure to train with him and learn from him.’

The quality Cummings has was always there but the help from Riordan since he started training with Hibs in September has also clearly helped him with him scoring 13-goals in 18-matches so far so long may this help from the 32-year-old continue with the latest Hibees icon learning from one of his own idols growing up!
