Livingston have confirmed the signing of Callum Crane on a pre-contract deal from Hibs as the Lions look to strengthen ahead of their surprise return to the Premiership.

The 22 year old full-back spent last season on loan with Alloa Athletic making 34 league appearances for The Wasps in League One.

Crane was once considered one of the best prospects within the Easter Road youth ranks but with the development of Sean Mackie and Lewis Stevenson’s consistency at first team level it was difficult to see him making the breakthrough with Neil Lennon’s men.

Interim Almondvale boss David Matindale told the official Livingston website:  “I’m excited by the signing of Callum as I believe he can play in a variety of positions, predominantly on the left hand side. Callum is a more natural left back but can play up one at left midfield, and I think he can be adapted to play at left centre midfield through time.”

He goes on to say that he’s had him watched various times by scouts and watched the player himself.

What are your thoughts, are you surprised to see Hibs let him run his deal down and allow him to leave or think he needed to move on in order to progress his career?

Certainly seems to have the goodwill of the Hibs fans for his departure on the official twitter:
