Former Hibee Paul Kane has urged the club’s board to break the bank for hitman Leigh Griffiths following his phenomenal start to the season.

Sitting proudly at the top of the SPL goalscoring charts with 12 goals in the same amount of games, lifelong Hibs fan Griffiths is in the form of his life playing for his boyhood heroes with the club sitting top of the league, in main due to the 22 year old’s clinical finishing.

Such is his spectacular rise to prominence, the striker unwanted by Wolverhampton Wanderers, was called into the Scotland squad for this week’s friendly match against Luxembourg.

Kano has however urged the board to keep the player at the club once his current loan deal expires, his second at Easter Road since moving south from Dundee.

The former midfielder turned publican told the Daily Record “Griffiths has been the difference between Hibs and the rest of the SPL outwith Celtic. He`s on fire, he`s top scorer, he`s in the Scotland squad and his last couple of finishes have been great.

“He`s going through a purple patch right now and if you were to take him out of the Hibs team it would be a massive loss to the club and the supporters.

“We managed to tie up the skipper James McPake after a loan spell last year and it would be terrific if they could do the same with Griffiths.

“Where do you replace that goalscoring prowess and how much would it cost us? If Wolves are looking for around £150,000 for him I`d urge (Rod) Petrie to break the bank and sign him.

“My worry is that Wolves say, ‘He`s our player, we want him back`. The ball`s in their court at the moment. He`d be a huge signing for Hibs and if he goes it would be an enormous loss.”

Griffiths form has led to speculation of other clubs interest with Ipswich Town, managed by Mick McCarthy who signed him for Wolves, being touted as a possible suitor whilst Celtic have also been rumoured as a possible destination.
