Hibs are set to announce the arrival of former Bristol City defender Liam Fontaine, with a deal set to be confirmed today.

The 28 year old centre half had spent time during pre season training with Bolton Wanderers who decided against offering the 6’2′ player a deal.

Fontaine, once tenuously linked with Liverpool, left Ashton Gate this summer having made more than 290 appearances for the club.

Having started his career at Fulham, he spent time on loan at Kilmarnock, Yeovil (twice) and Bristol City, before signing a permanent with The Robins in the summer of 2006 after departing Craven Cottage.

His arrival will boost the numbers at Easter Road with Paul Hanlon’s current injury leaving only Michael Nelson as a back up centre half with the veteran having already been told he is free to find another club by boss Alan Stubbs amidst interest from Cambridge United.

With a decent pedigree behind him, Fontaine will become only the Hibs Head Coach’s fourth permanent summer signing behind David Gray, Farid El Alagui and Scott Allan.

Fontaine could make an immediate debut for Hibs, providing all the relevant paperwork is completed in time, when they face Dumbarton in the Scottish League Cup this evening.
