Hibs boss John Collins has backed Steven Thomson as a future Scotland star after the midfielder was forced to withdraw from the B-squad to face Ireland tonight (Tues, Nov 14).

The 22-year-old was forced to pull-out of the squad because of flu – the same illness that forced him off against Inverness on Saturday. But although Collins has only been with Hibs for a short time, he has already seen enough to convince him that Thomson will soon shine for his country.

Collins told the Edinburgh Evening News: ‘It’s a shame for Kevin because he has been playing ever so well for us recently and it would have been good for him to have been involved tonight.

‘He’s obviously disappointed but I think he has got a big international future. If he can keep playing the way he has and moving forward for the club then I think he could do very well at international level.’

Three Hibs players are still available for the match – midfielders Scott Brown and Michael Stewart and defender Steven Whittaker could feature for Walter Smith in the match at Dalymount Park.
