Hibs turned up at Dens Park on Saturday fully expected to leave the City of Discovery with three points in the bag to maintain an unlikely title challenge however they were left embarrassed by a Dundee side who showed they may not be the SPL whipping boys any longer.
Having won only two league matches all season, ironically against another Edinburgh outfit, Hearts, The Dark Blues were heavy outsiders against a side who’d won their last three outings.
However as the saying goes, football is a funny old game and the Taysiders had the game wrapped up with half an hour of the match left to play.
Kyle Benedictus had given the home side a half time lead with a wonder strike midway through the first period which was a half in which Hibs barely contested.
Former Hibs striker Colin Nish was proving a thorn in the Hibees side, and despite hitting the ground all too frequently under little pressure, it was he who won the penalty which secured the victory after Steven Milne had prodded in a second, disputed by the Easter Road men who weren’t convinced the ball had crossed the line, and Kevin McBride, another former Hibee, smacked the ball down the centre of the goal with keeper Ben Williams diving to his right.
Despite having plenty of possession, the large travelling support which had made it’s way to the game were left disappointed with the performance of Pat Fenlon’s men.
Leigh Griffiths did pull a goal back in the final minute but a heavy defeat to a side rooted to the bottom of the table leaves the Hibees gaffer with more questions regarding the fragility of his side who were again without inspirational captain James McPake and Tim Clancy.
The return of McPake is urgently required as Paul Hanlon and Ryan McGivern as a central defensive partnership looked unsteady throughout the 90 minutes.
