Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink is a surprise contender to take the manager’s role at Easter Road according to a report in the Sunday Express.

Hasselbaink has been managing Royal Antwerp in Belgium but quit at the end of the season as he seeks a chance to boss in the UK.

He led his Antwerp side to seventh in the Belgian Second Division but his ability to do so on a small budget is said to have impressed Hibs.

Easter Road CEO Leeann Dempster has received more than 40 applications for the job since Terry Butcher was relieved of his duties last week but the emergence of Hasselbaink as a candidate is one sure to excite the Hibees faithful.

The former Chelsea striker would certainly boost flagging morale within a fan base currently at a low ebb following the club’s relegation to the Championship after a dramatic collapse which saw them win only one match from their final nineteen Premiership matches.

A play off defeat to Hamilton, throwing away a two goal first leg lead in the process to eventually lose on penalties saw Hibs relegated although the Scottish Championship is more appealing this season with city rivals Hearts and fallen giants Rangers also in the division.
