Alex Harris will take to the field in Sunday’s William Hill Scottish Cup Final against Celtic hoping he can outdo his Great Uncle Jimmy Dunn who appeared in two finals for the Hibees in 1923 and again the following year, which the Leith side were to lose on both occasions, once to this weekends opponents (1-0) and then to Airdrionians (2-0).
Dunn became part of Scottish football’s folklore whilst still plying his trade with Hibs when he played his part in Scotland’s 5-1 victory over England in 1928 which saw the Scots team nicknamed the “Wembley Wizards” with Huddersfield Town’s Alex Jackson netting a hatrick and Preston North End’s Alex James grabbing the other two.
Harris has revealed to the Daily Record how his dad spoke to him regarding the family connection and told the newspaper “My great, great uncle is Jimmy Dunn, who was a Wembley Wizard and played in back-to-back Scottish Cup Finals with Hibs.
“I was made aware of him a few years ago by my dad and uncle and it`s great to have someone like that in my family.
“There`s a pub in Easter Road with a photo of him so I`ve been to see that and I looked things up about him a few weeks ago because people at Hibs have been talking to me about him.
“He left Hibs for Everton after the Wembley match and it`s been great to learn about him.
“It`s come to the forefront recently and to know one of your family is so famous and has been so successful is brilliant.
“It`s a lot to live up to, though. Hopefully I can be even half as good as him but I`m looking forward to it.
“Since I`ve been a wee boy I`ve always wanted to be a footballer and he kept me going and made me push even more.”
Hibs are aiming to end a remarkable hoodoo in the competition which they’ve failed to win in 111 years with Sunday marking the tenth occasion they’ve appeared in the final since defeating Celtic 1-0 way back in 1902.
