Former Malaga and Real Bêtis boss Antonio Tapia has re-applied for the manager’s job at Easter Road, seven months after being overlooked in favour of Terry Butcher reports The Scotsman.
Tapia has led a nomadic managerial career having taken charge of no less than ten sides in his Spanish homeland with his greatest success enjoyed at Malaga whom he led to an eighth place finish in La Liga back in 2009.
The 54 year old was to take charge at Second Division Bêtis the following season however he lasted only six months prior to being dismissed after a string of poor results.
Since his spell with the Seville outfit he had a short spell in charge of Tenerife in 2011 before returning to Malaga in the summer of 2012 as a football advisor.
His agent, José Luis Martinez, has admitted his client’s interest in the post and admitted he’d like former Kilmarnock and Morton boss Kenny Shiels to assist him.
He told the newspaper : “I have made Hibernian aware of Antonio`s interest and I hope to hear from them soon.
“Obviously, he has not worked in Scotland before but, if he got the job, Antonio would like to take Kenny Shiels, the former Kilmarnock manager, with him as his assistant.
‘Antonio believes in playing attractive, attacking football and in developing young players. He knows that Kenny shares his philosophy and that his knowledge of the Scottish game would also be helpful.”
Tapia’s interest comes hot on the heels of the revelation Alan Stubbs, current reserve team manager at Everton, has been granted permission by his club to hold formal talks with Hibs CEO Leeann Dempster over the vacancy which arose from Butcher’s sacking last week.
