Hibs play-off hero, Jason Cummings, is expected to sign a contract extension shortly according to boss Terry Butcher.

The 18 year old, subject of much press attention since bagging a brace against Hamilton on Wednesday, currently has a year left on his current deal.

His two goal salvo against the Accies – the first a magnificent 25 yard piledriver and the second a wonderfully executed chip which beat ‘keeper Kevin Cuthbert and three defenders – gave Hibs their first victory since February and puts them in pole position to retain their Premiership status.

Cummings has endured a tough start to his professional career with boyhood heroes Hearts consigning him back to the youth ranks after releasing him when he suffered a cruciate knee injury.

The Scotland under 19 starlet produced a goal laden season for crack Edinburgh side Hutchison Vale and despite being offered double the money by the Tynecastle outfit for a return, signed a two year deal at Easter Road last summer.

Butcher has been pleased with the youngster’s rise to prominence and admitted to the Evening News : “It`s been fairytale in many ways, but it`s something he has deserved as he is not afraid of hard work.

“It`s been a meteoric rise when you think about it. He`s still got another year on his contract to run but at this moment we are in negotiations for a new one and we hope to get him tied up soon.”

“Jason had a cruciate knee ligament operation although you could never tell. I think he has been so determined to take the second chance which coming to Hibs has given him. It`s amazing how quickly his confidence has come back. He`s had a terrific season, he`s played regularly for the first team and been a prolific scorer for the Under-20s.

“He came here for half the money Hearts offered him, so that dispels any thoughts about his commitment to Hibs.”
