John Collins has urged Leigh Griffiths to continue his improving behaviour on and off the field this season and earn himself a starring role in the Premiership.

Griffiths, in his second season on loan at boyhood heroes Hibs, has enlightened the SPL with some devastating displays and netted some 28 goals over the course of the campaign.

Parent club Wolves last week invoked the one year option they had on his current deal, keeping the player at Molineux until next summer however the player himself is keen to remain north of the border close to friends and family.

Earlier in the week Griffiths admitted he would jump at the chance to extend his spell with the Hibees and said he hoped the two clubs could strike a deal to seal his permanent switch to Easter Road.

Collins, who left Hibs in 2007, stated in today’s Herald that he believed whilst Gareth Bale was currently the best left footed footballer in the UK, Griffiths wasn’t far behind.

‘The goals Leigh has scored this season, you could go to every top league in Europe, even the Bundesliga, and there haven’t been goals like that scored by Lewandowski or guys like that, he told the newspaper.

‘Gareth Bale’s got the best left foot in Britain but Leigh’s just behind.’

The former Scotland international believes he could easily play in the English top flight should he continue his current development both on and off the park.

He added ‘Could he play in the Premier League? If his mind was right and his lifestyle was right, then yes.

‘He’s got the talent. He could be a big player for Scotland, too, if all these things are right. You need to be a real professional for 10 years not just six months.’

Griffiths current deal with Hibs will finish after this Sunday’s Scottish Cup Final against Celtic and Collins believes the clash between two of his former clubs can see Hibs finally end their cup hoodoo having failed to win the trophy since 1902.

‘They’ll need a real team performance,’ he said ‘And must attack and defend as a team. If they attack with one or two and the midfield try and press and the back four sit off and leave gaps, then they’ll get torn to shreds.

‘The Scottish Cup hoodoo is part and parcel of being a Hibs player. It will be huge if Hibs can do it this time. It will be one long party.’

Sparky literally can score from anywhere. You can’t teach that talent. I’d be amazed if he wasn’t playing for a top English side within 4 or 5 years in time for the peak period in his career. I pray Petrie makes a deal with Wolves.
