Under fire Hibs boss Terry Butcher won’t quit the club despite protests urging him to do so in the aftermath of Sunday’s defeat on penalties to Hamilton in the Premiership play-off.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, the Englishman announced he had no intention of quitting the club despite leading them on a downward spiral since his appointment last November.

Hibs won only one Premiership match in their final 19 matches under his guidance and having now seen the Hibees relegated many supporters believe his position is untenable.

The negativity surrounding his role didn’t seem to affect his comments as he reflected “I never thought we`d be in this position. We thought we`d be challenging for the top-six a few months ago but it`s been a slide – like watching car crash – and we just haven`t been able to stop it.

“There will be implications on my job. I carry the can because I`m the manager and I`ve had ample time to have turned it round but I`ve been unable to do it.

“It`s my job to get points and win football games and I haven`t done enough. No one likes to see a club like this get relegated.

‘If it’s down to me I will be here. I want to continue because I would like the opportunity to restructure the club in the right way. But that situation is out of my hands now.’

Hibs fans love affair with the former England captain has diminished so greatly it would be foolhardy for anyone to suggest he’ll still be in the Easter Road hot seat when the new season kicks off this August.
